Swiss Museum of Transport – Rail, Road, Air and Water across 20,000 square metres beside Lake Lucerne
Rail, road, air and water across 20,000 square metres
About this experience
Last updated: 10 October 2026
Overview
The Swiss Museum of Transport covers 20,000 square metres on the Lucerne lakeshore. Rail, road, air and water each occupy their own halls. Its doors open 365 days a year, so no closed season interrupts a visit. Locals call it the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz. Historic aircraft and trains stand in the outdoor areas, where children climb between them. Beyond the transport halls, the site holds a planetarium, Switzerland’s largest permanent cinema screen and the Hans Erni Museum. Then there is the Swiss Chocolate Adventure. Consequently, one visit covers four attractions rather than one.
We arrived by boat, stepping off at the museum’s own Verkehrshaus-Lido jetty. Inside the rail hall, the scale takes a moment to settle. These are full-size locomotives under a glass roof, not scale models. Afterwards, the planetarium shows 360-degree films across the dome above your seat. In the Swiss Chocolate Adventure, a moving car carries you through the production stages. The smell arrives before the images do. Meanwhile, the outdoor yard stays loud with children working the interactive stations. Finally, the cafebar terrace faces the water and the traffic of the lake steamers.
Practical Information
The Swiss Museum of Transport charges CHF 37 for adult museum entry and CHF 16 for children under 16. Students and apprentices under 26 pay CHF 27. Children under 6 enter free. Alternatively, the day pass costs CHF 62 for adults and CHF 29 for children. It adds the planetarium, the filmtheatre, the Hans Erni Museum and the Swiss Chocolate Adventure. Additionally, each of those three attractions sells separately at CHF 18 for adults and CHF 10 for children. A two-day museum ticket costs CHF 50 for adults. Summer hours apply from 29 March to 24 October 2026, 10:00 to 18:00. Winter hours cover 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, 10:00 to 17:00. Allow two to three hours for the halls alone, or a full day with the add-ons.
Bus 6, 8 or 24 from Lucerne station reaches the Verkehrshaus stop in about ten minutes. Alternatively, the lake boats call at the museum jetty from April to October. Meanwhile, the shore walk from the old town takes roughly 30 minutes. A car park beside the site charges by the hour. Book online at verkehrshaus.ch to skip the ticket desk. However, the Swiss Chocolate Adventure keeps its own hours, 11:00 to 17:20 in summer and 11:00 to 16:20 in winter. Step-free access covers the main halls. The address is Haldenstrasse 44, 6006 Lucerne, and the museum answers on +41 41 375 75 75.
Also called Verkehrshaus der Schweiz in German.
