Saas-Fee Larch Forest Hike – Guided autumn walk above the glacier
A guided walk through larches above Saas-Fee
About this experience
Last updated: 12 October 2026
Overview
The Saas-Fee larch forest hike follows a trail network above the village at 1,800 metres. From Saas-Fee, the local guide service leads small groups along the Saaser Lärchen. This larch belt stretches from the village edge to the terminal moraines at 2,000 metres. Above, thirteen 4,000-metre peaks ring the cirque: the Allalin at 4,027 metres and the Dom at 4,545 metres. Along the upper treeline, European larch and Swiss stone pine share ground in a combination rare elsewhere in the Alps. The colour window opens in late September and typically peaks in the first two weeks of October.
The Fee Glacier appears through canopy gaps as the trail gains height. Stone pine cones — dark and resin-heavy — line the path above 1,900 metres. We climbed through amber larch stands as the scent of cold pine resin sharpened. At the upper clearings, the guide pointed to chamois tracks in the mud near the treeline. On clear October mornings, the glacier surface carries a faint mineral chill across the open ground. Cold air from the upper snowfield drops sharply at this elevation after midday.
