Patek Philippe Museum – Five Centuries of Geneva Watchmaking
Two thousand watches across five centuries in Geneva
About this experience

Overview
The Patek Philippe Museum occupies a six-storey building in Geneva’s Plainpalais district. Inside, the permanent collection holds more than 2,000 watches and clocks spanning five centuries — the world’s largest private assembly of antique timepieces. The collection divides into two parts: Genevan watchmaking from the 16th century onward, and Patek Philippe’s own manufacture history from 1839. Each level groups objects by period, making the sequence of technical development easy to follow.
Display cases on every floor hold pocket watches with enamel miniatures, early wristwatches, and grand complication movements. At close range, hand-engraved casebacks, guilloché dials, and escapements dating to the 1580s read clearly in subdued light. Beyond the watch collection, the museum displays historical watchmaking tools, music boxes, and animated automata. These pieces document the mechanical ingenuity that shaped the industry. Temperature-controlled galleries maintain consistent conditions; exhibit labels appear in French, German, and English.
