Interlaken town
It’s not unusual for a town to settle on the bank of a river or a lake but for it to sit between two lakes is quite unique! This is where Interlaken name comes from – “between the lakes”. Interlaken is built on a narrow stretch of valley between the emerald-colored waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. It is a traditional resort town in the mountainous Bernese Oberland region of central Switzerland. It features old timber houses and parkland on either side of the Aare River. Its surrounding mountains with dense forests, alpine meadows and glaciers have numerous hiking and skiing trails to experience. Truly there are tons of things to do in Interlaken!
Lake Thun (Thunersee)
An Alpine lake situated in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, Thunersee is made especially picturesque by the magnificent mountains that surround it and the quaint villages along its banks. The town of Thun from which the lake takes its name, is worth visiting in order to experience the grand castle and historical medieval Old Town. Also of note are the 12 beautiful churches that occupy the coastline, all dating back to the medieval period. Visiting Thun town, its lake and its castles is among the must do of things to do in Interlaken. While around Thun, you should visit the Oberhofen Castle on the lake. It is famous for its distinctive mediaeval architecture and its picturesque lakeside turret. The Oriental Smoking Room at the top of the tower offers a unique experience and a spectacular panorama over the lake and mountain, while the Castle Chapel features impressive murals dating from the 15th century. As you travel around the lake whether by car, train or boat you’ll pass a number of lovely lakeside villages, most of which warrant a visit. At Hilterfingen Hunegg Castle houses a Renaissance Revival and Art Nouveau Museum, whilst Faulensee is the ideal spot for partaking in watersports.
Iseltwald
Iseltwald, the pearl of Lake Brienz, on the opposite side of Interlaken! With about 420 inhabitants the pretty fishing village is one of the small communities in the canton of Bern. At over 23 km2, however, there is a diversity that is second to none: from the idyllic fishing bay to the highest mountain peaks with breathtaking views! You will find everything. Despite its small size, its definitely worth being on the things to do in Interlaken region.
Lauterbrunnen falls, of most stunning Switzerland waterfalls
Lauterbrunnen means “Many springs” in German or more accurately “Loud springs”. And the name is spot on. This little valley in the Swiss Alps has no less than 72 thundering waterfalls, some of which are several hundred meters high and among the most stunning of Switzerland waterfalls. If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan, you might know that it’s also at the Reichnebach Falls, just nearby Lauterbrunnen where Holmes has his presumed mortal combat with Professor Moriarty. The stunning Staubbach Falls “fall” a distance of 300 metres, making them the second largest of Switzerland waterfalls. Much spray is created, which when moved by the wind looks like glittering dust, giving the waterfall its name (“Staub” means “dust” in German). There are many other natural water phenomena in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, including a further 71 Lauterbrunn falls; Lauterbrunnen itself is picture-card quaint, nestling against the backdrop of three of Switzerland’s highest mountains. Skiing is popular here in winter, mountain biking and paragliding in summer. Hiking here is also among the best of Interlaken hiking. The thunderous Lauterbrunnen falls and dramatic cliffs have inspired many great writers and poets, such as J.R.R. Tolkien who got the inspiration for Rivendell during a hike from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen.
Schilthorn and Mürren

When you reach Schilthorn a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of the “Swiss skyline” including Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau awaits you at Piz Gloria.
