Christmas markets in Switzerland 2021 are a must-do ritual to put yourself in the festive mood! We really advise to visit one or 2 (or more!) in the Advent season preceding Christmas. Not yet in the mood for Christmas celebrations? Don’t worry, just walking between the stalls full of treats, gifts and goodies, will definitely get you in the right state of mind and soul. You almost start feeling again that Santa Claus exists!
Despite the numerous market cancellations in 2020, yet 2021 so far promises to be quite festive with many Swiss towns and cities setting up their Christmas villages. It is true that almost every town and even communes will set up stalls to bring Christmas spirit.
Now, we’d like to share our personal favourite Christmas Markets in Switzerland 2021 that plan to open their doors:
Noël au Jardin, Geneve
Dates: 18 November – 26 December 2021
Why we love it: we are definitely biased to events hosted in Geneva as we live here 🙂 Yet, this year the Christmas market will be located for the first time at Jardin Anglais, where you can spot the famous flower clock and enjoy an amazing promenade. It is very central, lively, and ideally located on the Lac Leman (also known as Lake Geneva), where you can also enjoy a breath taking view of the Jet d’Eau!
Montreux Noël, Montreux
Dates: 19 November – 24 December 2021
Why we love it: One of the most charming Christmas markets in Switzerland! You can actually get to meet & greet Santa at top of the Rochers-de-Naye and you can see him on his flying sleigh between the Hunter’s Place and the Place du Marché every day at 5, 6 and 7 pm! A sight one shouldn’t miss!
Christmas Market in Basel
Dates: 25th November – 23rd December 2021
Why we love it: It is one of the most authentic and fairy-like Christmas market in all Switzerland. Its size is impressive as the 100 stalls are spread over Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz.
According to the poll data from European Best Destinations, Christmas Market in Basel has been selected as the best European Christmas Market for 2021!
Christmas Market in Zurich
Dates: 25th November – 24th December 2021
Why we love it: For its highly diverse offering! The city sets its Christmas markets across several locations, each of them with a special atmosphere and theme. The Christmas market at the Train Station displays a gorgeous Christmas tree decorated by 7000 Swarovski crystals. The “Wienachtsdorf” or Christmas village is set-up against the spectacular backdrop of the Opera House and just steps away from the lake.

Why we love it: it is a treat for children! Santa Claus will visit the market on 4th of December starting from 12:30 to give sweets to the little ones at the children’s fairy tale houses and at Café Merz on the Bahnhofstrasse. The Poststrasse also transforms into an adventure street and you can practice curling, Christmas ball throwing and cross-country skiing.
There are many Christmas markets to share, but we couldn’t possibly list all the Christmas markets in Switzerland 2021. Each of them has its spark, its gems and we can only recommend to attend as much as you can during the festive Advent period.
